The Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) is proud to organise and welcome delegates to the 23rd PAQS Congress 2019 with the theme “Human Wisdom Amidst Emerging Technology”.

PAQS 2019 will be a gathering of the best minds in Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering. There will be many symposia, case sharing and research presentations on how to brave the current and imminent challenges facing the QS profession in particular, and the construction industry as a whole. The congress will be addressing each important topic to integrate contemporary and future technologies as well as concepts to elevate the profession and industry to greater heights.

The Use of Cross Laminated Timber in Major Construction Projects

Join us on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at the Danish Canadian Club of Calgary to learn more about the use of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) in major construction projects with Dr. Azzeddine Oudjehane, PhD., Board Director at Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) and Instructor at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT)

Presentation Summary

CLT is an engineered wood product in major construction projects that has disrupted the construction of high rise buildings globally. The race to build taller and higher with wood has been enabled by the high performances of CLT panels. The presentation will give an overview of the trends and state of the art in wood mass high rise contraction and highlight some of the sustainability and innovation characteristic of tall wood mass construction. A case study for a 10 storey building will be showcased.

This presentation will aim to deliver the following learning objectives:

  • Review the trends and state of wood mass construction;
  • Identify the performance of Cross Laminated Timber – CLT in construction;
  • Recognize the challenges and opportunities to tall wood mass buildings;
  • Demonstrate the construction value of tall wood mass construction.

Dr. Azzeddine Oudjehane, PhD

Dr. Azzeddine Oudjehane, PhD

Dr. Azzeddine Oudjehane has over 30 years of experience leading multi-disciplinary projects in R&D, business innovation and market development working with various stakeholders from Academia, Government and Industry. Azzeddine holds graduate degrees in both Applied Science and Business Administration.

In 2012, Azzeddine joined the first undergraduate BSc in Construction Project Management in Canada. Azzeddine strives through teaching excellence to train the next generation of construction project managers in Alberta and Canada, while developing scholarly applied research that meets the needs of the Alberta industries.

In 2014, Azzeddine was elected to the Board of Directors of the Alberta Chapter of the Canada Green Building Council, where he currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Leadership Board. Azzeddine is also the Treasurer and Secretary for the Board of Directors of Value Analysis Canada.

Azzeddine has continuously advocated the benefits of sustainable construction inside the classroom at SAIT preparing the next generation of leaders in construction. He has also led and supported various applied research projects demonstrating the feasibility and value of sustainable practices in construction and deconstruction. One of his current research emphases is on bringing innovative and energy efficient and sustainable construction methods to Alberta. He also collaborates and continues supporting the Unmanned Aerial Systems research team at SAIT with a focus on the various applications and implications of UAVs, in construction project management.

With over 100 publications and presentations at international conferences, Dr. Oudjehane serves in various journal review committees and has chaired sessions at conferences. In the past year, he gave several presentations and keynotes on the role of innovation for sustainable construction practices.
