Job Description

The Sr. Estimator is responsible for the oversight of the estimating team and process for all projects, bid and awarded, with York Excavating & Grading Ltd. and will establish standardized procedures, methods and processes for estimating and training estimating resources in the use of the same.

Roles and Responsibilities

Planning & Scheduling:

  • Establishes and/or works with established priorities and develops and implements a comprehensive schedule ensuring accurate sequencing and resource allocation to meet strategic project goals.

Pricing & Quantity Take Off:

  • Expert knowledge and ability to accurately prepare quantity take offs and establish relevant pricing for identified quantities.
  • Develop strong conceptual estimating skills – able to foresee issues and understand the big picture and what implications if any there are to the project.

Risk Management:

  • Upon the review and coordination of drawings and specifications, proactively analyze possible risks and identifying gaps, with recommended solutions.

Budgeting & Costing:

  • Prepare preliminary budgets and provide ongoing costing assistance identifying potential cost savings opportunities for clients as required.

Leadership:

  • Delegate responsibilities to team members with an intent to foster the long-term development of others through mentorship.
  • Express clear expectations & assesses employees’ abilities, provides opportunities to demonstrate capabilities by delegating full authority with the latitude to complete a task in their own way.
  • Provides ongoing feedback and appropriate resources to complete tasks assigned

Relationship Management:

  • Establish and maintain a professional network of key contacts and customers.
  • Assists sub contractors with pricing activities and is responsive to trade questions and concerns in order to continue to foster key relationships.
  • Actively participates in industry, client and community relations.

Skills and Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of estimating, scheduling, cost control, and purchasing.
  • Must have excellent communication, organization and computer skills.
  • Must be able to handle the project from inception to completion.
  • Proven ability to prospect, negotiate and close deals.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Proficient with all MS Office products (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to breakdown heavy construction operations into a logical sequence of activities.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Good attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies.

Education and Experience

  • 10 or more years estimating or project experience on heavy civil projects an asset.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent related work experience.

  • Review drawings and documents to determine scope of work and requirements
  • Research/Update historical data (purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity analysis reports, etc.) and compile summary reports to assist in future estimates
  • Work in collaboration with the Estimating team to create bid packages and prepare for closings
  • Support the Estimating team where needed
