Associate, Cost Consulting & Project Management

Overview

Working with the management team, the Associate is responsible for providing direction to a team of consultants to ensure a variety of cost consulting services are delivered to clients in an efficient and effective manner. Included in this client delivery, revenue management, business development providing technical expertise and leading a team of consultants.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide a full range of cost consulting services to new and existing clients. This involves a full technical understanding of principal service.
  • Develop and build long term client relationships which result in repeat business, referrals and service expansion including up-sells & cross-sells across other Business Units within Altus.
  • Lead the assessment of client requirements, conduct project reviews and deal with issues efficiently and effectively.
  • Work with Management to support the implementation of strategies which contribute to revenue generation, profitability and growth of the Business Unit – locally and nationally.
  • Achieve the established performance goals including client deliverables, financial and human resources objectives.
  • Ensure the development of priority plans, performance measurements, management controls and critical success factors.
  • Create and implement marketing / synergy plans for the assigned offices.
  • Lead the implementation of approved business plans and act as Champion for these initiatives within the team.
  • Lead and manage direct Sub-Committee and report to Management Team.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, coaching, mentoring and support to all direct reports.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • 7-9 years’ leadership experience in a commercial real estate or related field.
  • Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS), Member RICS, or Project Management Professional (PMP) is required.
  • LEED accreditation (an asset).

Roles and Responsibilities

The position responsibilities include quantity take-offs and pricing exercises for the respective disciplines across a diverse mix and size of projects. Some supervision of junior staff may be required.

Skills and Competencies

The candidates will need to have excellent computer skills, specifically Microsoft Excel and Word. Additional competencies with estimating software are valuable.

Education and Experience

Candidates must have graduated from a related post secondary program or have obtained relevant trade experience and must have obtained a minimum of two years relevant estimating experience. The successful candidates will be interested in pursuing further qualifications.

Overview

Supports Project Management and Construction team for estimating procedures and coordination of project initiatives for the High-Rise Division.

Roles and Responsibilities

Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare pre-feasibility study estimates and definitive release estimates
  • Prepare cost estimate reviews and reports with high level of accuracy
  • Prepare accurate reports of cost comparisons for different materials and cost trends
  • Maintain estimating software database, models and assemblies
  • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications and scope documents to prepare, analyze and maintain thorough take- offs with accurate quantities for all phases of high rise residential construction
  • Assists project manager with tendering and contract awards for large projects
  • Calculates pricing and estimates using an automated estimating system.
  • Input take-offs into Newstar software
  • On-site field visits to validate take-offs
  • Prepare quantity take-offs of different trades (Excavation, formwork, concrete, structural, mechanical, electrical etc)
  • Interact directly with vendors and trade partners during bid process
  • Interact directly with site superintendents and trade partners on current conditions and on all change orders
  • Value-engineering, assist in identifying cost-saving construction techniques and alternative materials to reduce costs and provide additional value
  • Work with appropriate trade partners to estimate standard selections and available selection choices (upgrade options).
  • Assist in the preparation of Purchase Orders for construction within Newstar software
  • Documentation management of materials and associated trade costs and purchaser pricing
  • Develop and document standard operating procedures and internal control procedures
  • Suggest and make recommendations for process improvement

Skills and Competencies

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook Express, Newstar REMS
  • Proven skills in quality take-offs and high rise construction cost estimating techniques
  • Strong conceptual, problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Exposure to AutoCAD and estimating software
  • High Rise Construction knowledge is preferred or commercial construction knowledge
  • Excellent knowledge in Structural, Mechanical, Electrical for high rise construction
  • Sound knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Construction Lien Act, Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Regulations for Construction
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A high degree of accuracy in numerical calculations and estimates
  • Good planning, documentation and time management skills
  • Must be able to prepare material take-offs from drawings (all disciplines)
  • Some travel may be required

Education and Experience

  • University/college degree in Engineering Technology or Construction Management
  • 10 years of high rise construction industry experience
  • Excellent software skills
  • Highly organized
