CIQS Announces 2016/17 Board Members

At its Annual Congress at the Old Mill in Toronto, Ontario this June the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors announced its board members and executive committee appointments.

Chair

Matt is Vice President of the Concosts Group of Companies and is based in Vancouver, British Columbia. With the company since 2005, his work experience includes a mix of loan monitoring, cost planning, and project and construction management of residential and commercial projects. He holds diplomas in building technology and civil engineering from the British Columbia Institute of Technology and obtained his Professional Quantity Surveyor designation from CIQS in 2010. Previous to this post, Matt was CIQS – British Columbia and Yukon representative and Secretary/Treasurer on the CIQS Board. He is also Past President of CIQS – British Columbia and Yukon.

David Dooks, PQS

Vice Chair

David is an Estimator for Lindsay Construction in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Locally owned and based in Atlantic Canada, Lindsay provides comprehensive construction services in commercial, industrial and institutional sectors specializing in Design-Build, Construction Management, and General Contracting. David's role as senior estimator includes bidding on public and private sector projects and provides concept construction budgets and cost planning to architects, engineers, owners and developer.

Past Chair

Craig is a Director with Hanscomb Limited, oversees the firm’s Hamilton Office, and is a Senior Electrical Cost Consultant. He has 34 years of experience as a licensed electrician, quantity surveyor and trade estimator and is highly regarded for his expertise with specialized electrical systems such as Fire Alarm, Nurse Call, Security and IT/ICAT.

In addition to providing leadership and direction to the Hamilton Office’s production staff on myriad different project types, Craig is responsible for coordinating cost estimates and studies throughout all levels of the design and construction process, establishing and reconciling budgets, initiating and developing value engineering procedures and proposals, and monitoring irregularities and changes in a project’s scope. Craig’s responsibilities also include providing Master Plan and Functional Program estimates for a diverse mix of project types in Ontario and across Canada.

Craig joined CIQS in 2005 and received his Professional Quantity Surveyor designation in 2007. He has served as CIQS-Ontario Central Hamilton Chapter Vice President & President, and as Registrar, Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President, President and Past President on the CIQS-Ontario Board. On the national CIQS Board, Craig has previously served as Registrar, Chair of the CIQS Membership, Staffing, Business & Long Range Plan and Governance committees, Vice Chair and Chair.

Sheri Thompson, PQS

CIQS — Ontario Representative

Sheri Thompson is a unique member of the CIQS with a rare but not unheard of combination of skillsets. In her role as Specification Writer at MMC Architects in Toronto, Sheri integrates her PQS knowledge of cost estimating and value engineering with the evaluation of building systems and materials. She has over 18 years of experience as a quantity surveyor and specification writer in various industry sectors including institutional, recreational, retail, commercial and residential projects throughout North America and the Middle East. Sheri is detail oriented, organized and motivated, she is always ready for a new challenge.

Sheri joined the Institute as a Ryerson University Student Member in 1995 and received her Professional Quantity Surveyor designation in 2001. She began her involvement with the CIQS-Ontario Board as the Central Hamilton Chapter representative in 2007 and has since served as Registrar and Vice President. At the 2015 AGM in Kingston, Sheri became the second female CIQS-Ontario President.

Erin is a self-employed Cost Consultant at TakeOff Construction in Nova Scotia. She provides construction estimates during various phases of development and cost planning to consultants and developers, as well as takeoff and estimating to contractors. A graduate of Architectural Engineering Technician at Nova Scotia Community College, she has over 15 years experience in the construction industry. She is Treasurer for CIQS – Maritimes.

CIQS — British Columbia and Yukon Representative

Angela is a Professional Quantity Surveyor with over 16 years experience in the construction industry spanning South Africa, the UK and Canada. She is currently with Turner & Townsend, a global construction cost consultancy leading the Project Monitoring service line for the Vancouver office. Angela's experience is diverse having worked as a cost manager, a project monitor and a management consultant. Angela also brings extensive international lecturing experience and is currently a part-time instructor at the British Columbia Institute of Technology for the CM Degree Program.

CIQS — Prairies and NWT Representative

Wendy, a Professional Quantity Surveyor with a wealth of experience in loan monitoring, cost consulting, and risk management, is currently an instructor at SAIT Polytechnic’s School of Construction in Alberta. She joined CIQS in 2004 and has been on the Board for CIQS-Prairies and Northwest Territories since 2012. This is Wendy's second year on the CIQS Board of Directors.

CIQS — Newfoundland and Labrador Representative

As the owner of Cambrian Management Services, Roy provides commercial support to the construction and energy sectors. Originally a product of the construction industry in the United Kingdom, he has been an active quantity surveyor in Canada since 1977 and currently resides in St. Mary's Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. He attained his Professional Quantity Surveyor designation from CIQS in 1993, and has sat on the Institute's board for 18 years. He served as national CIQS President in 2011.

CIQS — Québec Representative

Guillaume Robitaille possesses more than 18 years experience in the construction industry. At the beginning of his career as a fireman and construction worker, he slowly climbed the ranks from superintendent to project manager to eventually becoming a construction economist and a specialist in project management specifically in cost control. A balance between the budget and completion of the work is paramount. In his career he has completed more than 400 projects and more than $2.5 billion of executed work under his direction, primarily concentrated in the high-rise building sector. He is active in the real estate field and has an outstanding knowledge of the Montreal market.

Education Administrator

David is Director, MEP, Cost Consulting & Project Management, Altus Group Limited in Toronto. With over 28 years of experience, his expertise includes providing electrical estimates and budgets from conceptual to pre-tender stages using architectural sketches and design briefs to finished engineering drawings and specifications, value engineering, life cycle costing and analysis of change orders and variations. David joined CIQS in 1986 and has served on boards and committees of the CIQS–Ontario since 1994, and as the national Education Administrator since 2008.
